The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has announced this years nominees for induction.  There are 9 nominees this year and only 5 can be voted in.  Which 5 will go in? Here are the choices.

Afrika Bombaataa - His claim to fame is that he mixed hip-hop with techno to produce the terrible song Planet Rock.  Going in?  Not a chance.

Beastie Boys - This is a no brainer, these guys will get in and should.  They are a big reason that rap crossed over into the mainstream.  They were much more than just a gimmick, their songs were clever and stupid, but extremely catchy and fun.  Going in?  Without a doubt.

Chic - Chic, unlike most disco groups, were a band and in the 70’s when disco began to die, Chic incorporated more funky guitar grooves.  The band’s new funk sound, along with it’s reputation of being a fun live band allowed the band a longer career, than most of their overproduced disco counterparts.  Going in?  I think they are up against too much competition, maybe next year.

Leonard Cohen -  This is the “smart rock critic” choice.  The guy is a second rate poet/singer-songwriter/folk singer.  He is in the same vain of Bob Dylan to me and his greatness baffles me.  Going in?  Shouldn’t even be fucking nominated.

The Dave Clark Five - These guys were unfortunate to have to compete with the Beatles in the 60’s and while they may not be as good as the Beatles, they were better than most in the 60’s.  Their pop/rock sound earned them 17 top 40 hits, between 1964 and 1967.  Will they go in?  They should, they have been over looked for a long time and they deserve a little credit for their part in the British Invasion.

Madonna - She is, without a doubt, one of the most controversial and influential artists of all time.  Going in?  Of course.

John Mellencamp - Johnny Cougar has long been overlooked, considered by some as a second tier Bruce Springsteen.  Mellencamp has often pissed off critics with his “I don’t give a shit, common man attitude”, but to their disapproval and early bad reviews, his career was a huge success.  He was  just a guy singing songs that related to everyday normal people.  He has never allowed himself to be stuck into any musical mold.  His music has been a mix of blues, rock, country, folk and r&b throughout his impressive career.  Going in?  He should, but remember the critics and voters just don’t like the guy.

Donna Summer - She was the queen of disco.  When you think disco you think The Bee Gee’s and Donna Summer and the Bee Gee’s are in, so she should be too.  Going in?  She should.

The Ventures - They are the most popular rock instrumental group ever.  They released 40 albums and almost every one of them charted.  They also had 17 top 40 hits, which is pretty impressive for an instrument act. The band continued to tour throughout the 80’s and were popular throughout the world.  Will they go in?  They could surprise some people, but I think Mellencamp should go in before they do.

My faggish instincts tell me that Madonna and Donna Summer belong there. My rock n roll gut reaction tells me that Mellencamp belongs there. The rest can go to hell.

Maddona, Summer, Beastie Boys and Mellencamp should all go in for sure. Don’t care about the others.

If Madonna will be there, Donna Summer must be there too!! Do people realise what organ Donna Summer’s got?? Ever heard her sing live???

The problem with Donna Summer - at least in the eyes of the voters - is that she sang a now-unpopular form of music.

I personally consider “disco” to merely be danceable pop music … and frankly, it was better musically than all of the pop music made today except for Justin’s stuff. If people like Summer can’t get into the Hall now, then in a few short years, they will have NOBODY worth nominating.

I agree Ray, that she might have a problem getting in because of that fact that she sang disco. I am also, not a fan of Disco, however, I think that the Bee Gees and Donna Summer have to be in.

The only way they shouldn’t is if you exclude Disco all together. I just don’t see how they could do that. I mean, Country and Rap have a wing in the Hall, so put her in.
