VH1 At It Again

In a new list, for which VH1 is becoming infamous, the one time music video outlet has brought us the top 100 songs of the 90’s.  First of all a list like this could be fun if you were to get it right, unfortunately the masterminds at VH1 always find a way to fuck this shit up.  That is not to say that they got number 1 wrong, they most certainly got it right.  But a choice so obvious is a bit anti-climactic that the focus goes on the rest of the list and that is where things go wrong.  Here’s the top ten.

01. Nirvana “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
02. U2 “One”
03. Backstreet Boys “I Want It That Way”
04. Whitney Houston “I Will Always Love You”
05. Madonna “Vogue”
06. Sir Mix-A-Lot “Baby Got Back”
07. Britney Spears “…Baby One More Time”
08. TLC“Waterfalls”
09. R.E.M. “Losing My Religion”
10. Sinéad O’Connor “Nothing Compares 2 U”

You can see the complete 100 here.

If you look at the list you will notice that VH1 does not have an artist with more than one song on the list.  Now I know that Nirvana has the great distinction of being number1 but does that mean that Heart Shaped Box is a worse song than Rico Suave? Is Achy Breaky Heart better than EMF’s Unbelievable?  Is Color Me Bad better than Hootie?  This is obviously just a thrown together list until about the top 25.  If that is the case just do 25 and don’t rank any more.  There are some glaring omissions in the list, I mentioned Heart Shaped Box, but how about Freedom ‘90, Gimme One Reason, November RainAlive, etc. etc.  Tell me who else should have been on the list.

What does “top” mean? The best ones artistically? The most commercially successful??

Sure, Britney had a major hit with that “Baby One More Time” crap, but the song is absolutely terrible.

I only see one Nirvana song on the list, and I can think of at least two more that deserve to be there.

Where’s Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice?”

    Where’s “Believe” by Cher?

    Ray look closer

    73. Marcy Playground “Sex and Candy”
    74. Cher “Believe”
    75. Kris Kross “Jump”

That list is terrible. Half of the songs on the list shouldn’t be.

    Where are these songs?

Santana with Rob Thomas - Smooth
    Faith No More - Epic
    Nine Inch Nails - Closer
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away
Tom Cochrane - Life Is A Highway
    Prodigy - Fire Starter

I agree Eric, Tears in Heaven was a big miss!

Eric, personally I’d substitute Policy of Truth for Enjoy the Silence.

    Otherwise your picks are stellar.

Why do you guys waste so much time discussing (or constructing) these stupid lists? Who gives a fuck what vh1 (or you) considers worthy of mention. Why propagate such futile mental masturbation?

People love lists, Frank. Who knows why. Ask God.

It stirs debate and debate is fun.
