The Best Of Black Entertainment
In honor of Martin Luther King day, I thought I would take a look at some of the best moments in the history of black entertainment.
First it’s only appropriate to look back on Dr. Martin Luther King’s I Have A Dream speech. King’s words were powerful and heartfelt and unfortunately we are still a long way from ending racism.
Let’s start with music. The quality of black music has been on a big decline lately, but in the 80’s when rap music busted onto the mainstream it was raw and in your face. NWA were largely responsible for this success and this is why.
Black television shows have also become watered down. The shows that are on today, rely heavily on a rap music soundtrack, racial tension and stereotypes. The worst shows of the 80’s were not even as bad as thebest stuff they are throwing out now. Shows like 227, Amen, and Gimmie A Break were bad, but at least they provided some laughs.
None of the shows today can will even come close to providing the types of characters we got in the 70’s. Characters like Rerun.
Fred Sanford
Arnold
George Jefferson
and the cast from the greatest black T.V. show ever of Good Times.
The movie industry has also become a joke for black movies. The only black directors of any significance are Spike Lee and John Singleton. Their movie aren’t always the best, nut at least they don’t make movies like Norbit. I leave you with a clip from the best black movie of all time, Boyz N The Hood. In this scene, Cuba Gooding Jr. gives you every emotion he has. WOW, what a performance.

I’m not sure I agree with you. While the black television of the 70’s was certainly fun and sometimes funny I wouldn’t say it was that great of quality.
And I’d have to say, even though I hate, Do the Right Thing is the best film made by a black director.
And as far as Music goes how about some Ojays. Now you’re talking.
Ummm. Fear of a Black Planet?
@ Megan - Great album, but not as good as Straight Outta Compton. Plus one produced Ice Cube, Eazy - E and Dr. Dre. The other produced Flavor Flav and Brigitte Nielsen.
