In Memoriam - Heath Ledger

ledger.jpgHeath Ledger died today at the age of 28.  This is a terrible loss, not only for those close to him and the Hollywood community, but for fans of film every where.

Ledger was not some ordinary pretty boy actor, he had true talent and real acting chops.  Though his work as an actor goes back to the early 90’s, his big break through came in 2000 starring opposite Mel Gibson in The Patriot.  On the heels of that success he continued to take on some very challenging and deep roles.  Best known for playing Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, Ledger took the role despite the great scrutiny that surrounded it.  Unashamed and unconcerned with the backlash he gave a great performance in an unconventional part.

My favorite performance of his is that of Sonny in Monster’s Ball.  Here he showed a level of talent that, in my opinion, surpassed costar Billy Bob Thorton.  Every look, every line, and every scene is 100% real.  I was looking forward to more of this in his just completed Batman sequel, The Dark Night.  Though the film is still in post production, the word is that Ledger has brought a brilliance and a terror to the role of The Joker that Jack Nicholson could only have dreamed of.  Now we will have to look forward to this film knowing that it is the last time we will see him.

Initial reports say that drugs may have been involved in Ledger’s death.  This is something that obviously happens way too often with young famous people.  It is a real shame, 28 is certainly way too young.  He will be missed.
