It Ain’t Cool

aint-cool.jpgEveryone knows that Harry Knowles, the so-called “head geek” over at Ain’t It Cool News, is a media conglomerate-sucking whore of epic proportions. Harry would eat out his dead grandmother’s cold, gray asshole if he thought there was a dime just inside her rectum.

But this article decrying the death of HD-DVD is just too much to bear.

Many months ago, Harry wrote a slathering, definitive endorsement of the HD-DVD format on his site. In it, he passed off HD-DVD as the great savior of media, while characterizing Blu-Ray as some cheap knockoff. Blu-Ray just doesn’t look as nice he said repeatedly in his article. And besides, he whispered, we should all just give in and submit to the power of Microsoft.

Well, the format war is mercifully over. This media-hyped “war” over which giant media company would be the one to claim billions of dollars ended decisively this past week with HD-DVD manufacturer Toshiba ending production on the machines. Microsoft lost the format war. Blu-Ray is the winner.

Which leaves our dear Harry in a quandry. He told all of his “fans” to buy HD-DVD - it was going to eventually win!!! - and now their hard-earned money has gone for nothing. So Harry posted a formal admission of failure yesterday on the site. In the process, however, he revealed WHY he endorsed HD-DVD the entire time. Notice this interesting paragraph:

I love both formats - but generally I prefer the HD DVD discs. I have around 300 titles in hi def - a mixture of HD DVD and BLU RAY. I have 4 HD DVD players - and 1 BLU RAY player - and now that it has ended - I hope that the focusing upon BLU RAY means that the format becomes better.

Hmmm … from where do you suppose Harry got FOUR HD-DVD players?? He has four of those, and only one Blu-Ray … it sounds to me like Sony wasn’t willing to kiss Harry’s fat, crippled ass, and so Microsoft received Harry’s endorsement.

This world makes me sick sometimes. Sincerely. Every fucking organization on earth - from governments to charities to shitty movie websites - have a corporate cock up their ass. The ME generation has morphed into the WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME generation. You can’t even eat a fucking granola bar in America without seeing special interest money right there in the ingredients.

This revulsion for corporate bullshit made me not care one iota about the format wars. That is, until Harry yet again typed out another stream-of-consciousness essay that revealed the machinations behind his so-called opinions.

Now I have only one thing to say: HOORAY FOR SONY!!

I remember reading a few months back at one of Harry’s All Night movie marathons that everyone in attendance was given a free HD-DVD player. So, it is obvious that they were trying to favor Harry’s opinion. Which I guess was the case.

But then again, there was money on both sides going around in the final days of HD. HD was said to be paying the studios, when at the last minute Blu Ray paid more.

@ Moviezzz - Yeah, it’s pretty fucking sick all around.

Your indignation is indeed righteous Ray, but you have to admit that anyone taking blind advice from Harry Knowles on anything gets exactly what they deserve. Even if you’re not willing to go the extra mile and assume that there is some kind of quid pro quo going on, his opinions are usually always clouded by pure, uncut emotion.

Must be nice to have afforded to pick a side. I can barely afford to rent the new releases on regular DVD, let alone buy a new player. It would be nice if someone was shoving all kinds of free shit in my face.

@ cjkennedy - That’s a terrific point!!! They get what they deserve!!

@ Chris - My dick is free.

Your sarcasm is well taken, but…oh nevermind.

cjkennedy - I was not being sarcastic! Why does everybody think I am ALWAYS being sarcastic???

I’m with cjKennedy here and it’s exactly why I avoid Ain’t It Cool and for the most part Hollywood Elsewhere. I don’t feel opinions are genuine when they have advertising running on either side of their post.

I haven’t experienced either so I can’t weigh in on what looks better, but Beta lost the video tape wars and that was a far superior technology - just marketed wrong.
