White Power?
In the latest edition of the St. Louis American, a weekly newspaper aimed at the African American reader, entertainment reporter Kenya Vaughn had some interesting news regarding her viewing of Tyler Perry’s latest film. Please read her article here.
According to the article, the ticket sales for several different showings of Why Did I Get Married? were credited to other films. Many loyal Perry patrons discovered that the tickets sold to them had a different film’s title on them.
While I am sure that isolated mistakes happen in ticket sales, this seems intentional. As eye opening as Ms. Vaughn’s article was, the most disturbing thing to me was the comments which followed. By the number of emails and phone calls registered, it seems obvious that this is occurring all over the country.
Why?
Sure, I would like to see Why Did I get Married? fail, but that’s because Tyler Perry is a horrible filmmaker and I don’t want to see him make any more movies - ot has nothing to do with the fact that he is black.
Either there a whole lot of pimply faced 17 year old film purists working these box offices or they are a bunch a bigots. Are we still that fucked in the head that this is how some of us vent our racial hatred? By selling different movie tickets in order to hurt the black filmmaker’s box office?
I am a fairly ordinary middle class white guy, and I don’t pretend to understand what it’s like to be the target of racial stereotyping. However, this seems like it could be clear even to David Duke that something’s out of whack. In the whole scheme of things is it really that big of a deal, robbing the rich like Perry? Probably not, but it goes to show how low some will stoop to make a silly point.
What a dumb way to get a fucked up message across. Don’t hide behind bullet proof glass trying to boost Will Ferrell’s box office. I think he’s doing alright without your help.
Excellent article, Chris. It’s hard to believe that this is happening … I mean, who’d have thought that people are actually buying tickets to that movie?? LOL
By the way, you are also the victim of discrimination, but it usually only presents itself as an irritated comment like, “Stop giggling like that, you freak!”
Wait a minute. My laugh is adorable.
Fuck Tyler Perry, and his stupid ass movies. I don’t say that because he’s black, I say that because his movies are stupid.
If this is really happening all over America, then how was this movie #1 last week and #2 this week? I have a hard time believing that this was that serious of an issue. I also can’t beleive that many people are dumb enough to waste their money on this shit.
