The band Cake has always been a mystery to me.  Their songs are somewhat boring and monotone and yet I have always been a fan.  They have just enough catchy distorted guitar riffs, out of place trumpet solos and just enough sarcasm to suck me it.  I not even sure it’s meant to be sarcastic, but it is to me.  Anyways, they are back, kind of.

It’s been 3 years since the band’s last album, but a new one is on the way.  Their next album “B-Sides And Rarities” is due out October 2.  The album may not feature new material, but this could be a good collection anyway, after all all of their songs sound like B-Sides.  The album will feature a some interesting covers, like Kenny Rogers – “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town”, ”Mahna Mahna” made famous on the kids show “Sesame Street”, Frank Sinatra – “Strangers In The Night”, Barry White – “Never, Never Gonna Give You Up”.

The also recoded a version of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” and had a contest to make the video.  Here is the winning video.

The band is no stranger to covers, one of their first hits was a cover of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”.

Here is my personal favorite Cake song “The Distance”
