When Tammy Faye appeared on Larry King Live, the whole world gasped at both her appearance, and the awful knowledge that the person right in front of us would be dead very soon.
As in one day later.
Rarely do we ever stare death directly in the face. Even close family members die from cancer much the way Tammy Faye did, and yet we do not see them in their final moments as we did during this fortunately-timed interview.
In her lifetime, Tammy Faye caused nearly as much grief as she did inspiration. A polarizing figure, she managed to rebound from infamy as a representative of eighties excess into one of the most lively and self-aware celebrities in popular culture.
But this brave interview did something more to this woman’s legacy than everything else combined could ever hope to accomplish.
