Do It Yourself Filmmaking

Hollywood continues to make worthless, creatively-bankrupt shit-flicks that rob audiences of intelligence, self-worth, and the will to live. Billions of dollars - money that could be used to change our world for the better - go inexplicably instead to finance cold, bloody cumstains like Norbit and Wild Hogs. Thinking people everywhere might be right to wonder if Hollywood’s modus operandi is to destroy the world.

Fortunately some out there make movies simply for the joy of the process. And thanks to technology, the ability to express their art has been made much simpler and easier.

A group called Mediashed has developed a system for making movies - and it’s entirely free.

No Sign Of Special Effects

As the old Hollywood adage goes: “The best special effects are the ones you never see.”

Of course, we live in an age of total and obvious CGI immersion at the theater. Occasionally an effect astounds, but they almost always reveal themselves easily as illusions.

But with Zodiac, director David Fincher showed that effects can seamlessly and invisibly integrate into a film, making it another useful tool in telling a realistic story. Check out this amazing highlight reel of special effects from the film that you never knew were there:

Return of the Jedi - The Cinematic Revolution

ewok2.jpgBoldfaced lies in faulty classroom textbooks insist that historical milestones occurred prior to 1983. But for me, however, that year not only spawned an artistic tsunami in the motion picture industry, but also marks the dawn of human consciousness.

1983: The year George Lucas presented humanity with its most enduring treasure: Return of the Jedi.

While films prior to that legendary date had achieved certain insignificant milestones like sound, color, and, best of all, musicals, the art form had yet to realize its true potential. So Lucas, sensing that the world was ready to receive his vision, crafted a screenplay of undeniable power and placed it in the sure hands of the greatest director a successful trilogy could ever possibly want - Richard Marquand.

With these two pieces put brilliantly in place, Lucas and his eager team of yes-men embarked on an emotional and spiritual journey to not only conclude the story started by the two lesser films in the trilogy; they attempted to heal the world through film. Let’s look at some of the wondrous moments in Return of the Jedi that so profoundly altered the course of film and life itself:

Drowning In Timberlake

August 22, 2007 · Filed Under Movies, Music, The Cutting Edge · 8 Comments

jt3.jpgWhile all of the media rags breathlessly detail every cooch-flash of Britney Spears, the most talented young performer of this generation is building himself a mighty empire.

Justin Timberlake continues to set the pace.

Even though Timberlake looks like a fifty year old man, he has the sex appeal, raw talent, and uncanny instincts to dominate all aspects of multimedia.

Of course, we used to say that about Michael Jackson

In addition to completely owning (or should I say pwning? Man, I hate that shit) the music industry over the last several years, Timberlake has branched out into film fairly successfully as well. First came well-received turns in Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan. Now he’s being recruited by Mike Myers to save a sinking ship.

Back in 2004, one visionary filmmaker named Stephen Van Vuuren imagined making a film on his home computer that could play on IMAX screens. His dream project involved making a Fantasia-esque trip to Saturn, with the film comprised solely of still photographs. Van Vuuren manipulates the photographs through a technique he developed which he calls “2.75-D” … not quite 3-D, but pretty damn close.

Here is the eye-popping trailer for the unfinished film:

YouTube Reforms the Elections

I think we all realize that the political system in the United States has been flushed into a swirling toilet bowl of gridlock, partisanship, greed, and, more recently, downright evil.

In recent times, the common man could not get a straight answer or a beneficial action out of his elected officials if he marched on Washington with an armed militia. Ahhhh … doesn’t THAT sound nice??

Now it appears that the YouTube generation has broken down part of the barrier that separates the ruling class from the peasants. And for once, not with videos of people farting the alphabet.
