Anvil Concert Review

This past Friday night, Canadian metal band Anvil made a stop in St. Louis. They played in front of a fairly large crowd at one of St. Louis’s top concert venues, The Pageant. The crowd was full of metal-heads of all ages and while it was obvious that most of the fans there had never heard of Anvil before the documentary “Anvil! The Story of Anvil”, they were loud and into every note the band ripped out.
Another Dumb Ass List
Filed under: Dumb Ideas, Good Grief, Huh?, Internet Stupidity, Lists, Music, Music Discussion, Underrated Music
of Yahoo recently took the time to put together the 25 Worst Hair Metal bands of all time, for his List Of The Day blog. The great thing about list is the fact that they almost always seem to spark some sort of debate or discussion. This list though, comes across as being written by somebody who doesn’t really know much about the subject and that makes the list come across as stupid.
The biggest problem of the list is putting Poison #1.

That seems to be the safe pick, for everybody. You mean to tell me that Poison were worse than Trixter or Slaughter or Winger? Winger isn’t even on the list, but I’ll get to that later. By putting Poison #1, it proves that he really knows nothing about the type of music. Yet the average music fan listens to this opinion, because he must know what he’s talking about. After all it’s his job to know, right?
The next huge mistake was putting Skid Row #2.

Yes, Sebastian Bach is an arrogant egotistical jack-off, but Skid Row aren’t a hair metal band. I know they get lumped into the category, but they shouldn’t. It’s kind of like in the mid 90’s when every band that came out of Seattle was grunge. Seriously, who in the hell really thought that Candlebox or the Screaming Trees were grunge. So again to say that Skid Row is “hair metal” is wrong and to say that they were worse than Bad English, Bullet Boys or Slaughter is ridiculous.
The other problem I have with the list is the bands that were left off. How does Winger miss making the list.

How about Nelson, Faster Pussycat, or Kix? These bands not only should have made the list, but they should have been way above Poison, Skid Row and Whitesnake. I wish when people make a list they would actually put a little thought into it and not just take the easy route and throw the safe picks at the top.
I’m sure Rob O’Connor is a knowledgeable guy, but this list would suggest otherwise.

Last night country music had it’s big night. The Country Music Association’s had it’s 41st annual CMA award show and had a few pleasant surprises. The award show has long been deemed political by many in the country music industry, mostly by the ones that don’t win or get nominated. So this year, some of country music big manes boycotted the event. Stars like Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Toby Keith decide not to attend.

Great Live Performances

Stealing a page from Eric’s book, I would like to offer a great live performance that I nearly forgot about until recently. In 1993, with the release of Willie Nelson’s Across the Borderline, the country legend teamed with Paul Simon to appear on Saturday Night Live. A cover of Simon’s Graceland appeared on the album so it only seemed fitting that they could appear together for a performance. They did two songs. Graceland and Still is Still Moving to Me. There is something about the chemistry between these two that I really like.

It seems strange that the person who gained the most from the death of Kurt Cobain, was not the person who killed him, COURTNEY LOVE. It was actually Dave Grohl. Had Cobain lived and Nirvana continued, Grohl would have been left buried behind the drum kit with all of his talent trapped inside of just two small drum sticks. After all, drummers are never allowed to write songs.

Last night Megadeth brought their United Abominations tour to St. Louis (actually Pops in Sauget, IL).
After many lineup changes and a couple sub par albums (Risk, Cryptic Writings) the band has been making it’s way back atop the metal scene. The band is out to promote their latest and eleventh album United Abominations. The band’s return to old school thrash, a return that began with The World Needs A Hero, then The System Had Failed has now hit full circle.
Into The Great Divide
Have you ever found yourself not giving a new song a chance because you disliked the artist? Have you ever heard a song that you liked, only to find out that you hate the artist and so refuse to admit to anybody that you actually like it. I think we are all probably guilty of this at least once.
For that very reason, Spike, the program director at Chicago alternative rock station WKQX (Q101) decided make all the DJ’s start playing a song and only allowing them to say it was performed by a mystery guest.
