Guillermo Del Toro is a perplexing director. From the embarassing “Hellboy” to one of the greatest films this century, “Pans Labyrinth,” he always gets our attention. His next experiment follows suit…
“Splice” (starring Adrien Brody) set to release in 2009, is a science fiction/horror film. Here’s the plot:
Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named Dren, the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators – only to have that bond turn deadly.
This sounds pretty cool. I think Adrien Brody’s a great actor. It’s just really hard to watch the guy cry. Makes you want to kill yourself.
You can already see hints of “Mimic” and “Pan’s Layrinth” in this. Crazy experiments, strange creatures, danger, action, sadness, etc. What is weird about Del Toro is that he’s making “Hellboy 2: The Golden Army” in-between “Labyrinth” and this new flick that sounds awesome. “Hellboy” was just enormously difficult to sit through. Why go back to the vomit if you have a tried and tested way to make great movies. Del Toro has said in interviews that he makes movies of the things he had dreams or nightmares about when he was a child. So many of the creatures we see in his movies come from things he saw as a child. This in itself is just cool. Let’s just hope he only had 2 dreams about Hellboy, so a 3rd won’t be made. UGH.
If the upcoming “Splice” is made in the fashion of “Pans Labyrinth” we’re in for another great Del Toro treat. If the movie turns into a war between a crying Adrien Brody and the forces of Hades, no one will ever go to the movies again.
Thanks Obsessed With Film.

Adrien Brody is hard to enjoy. Whenever he’s onscreen, I see him acting. That, and his gigantic nose.
However, I would watch Del Toro take a crap, so I am already interested.
This sounds good. I think Brody is always good in his roles, so that should help too. I really liked him in the movie “The Jacket” a couple years ago, it was a real mind fuck.
I agree with Eric here. I’ve always enjoyed watching Brody on screen. Yes, Del Toro is amazing…But what about the whole “Hellboy” thing. Doesn’t it make you uneasy?
Del Toro always strikes me as being at his best when he’s dealing with his own things. Devil’s Backbone and pan’s Labyrinth were both amazing works of art. And, while I found Hellboy to be enjoyable, it’s not of the same caliber. I am, however, pretty sure it makes a bit more money for him. So, if the trade off is that I need to watch him make money so that he can do more interesting work on the side, I’m okay with that.
@ dreamrot – AMEN!! Let Del Toro do whatever he wants with “Hellboy 2,” just as long as he can get more money to make more perfect films!!!
Actually, I think Del Toro will do something great with “Hellboy 2.” He is a much more confident filmmaker now than when he made the first one.
Lets hope so.
