The movie adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s brillant novel The Road sees it’s first serious flaw; not casting the man above, Viggo Mortensen. So, who’s getting the part?
This guy:

Guy Pearce. Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t believe Pearce to be a terrible actor. He was great in Memento and decent in the re-make of The Count of Monte Cristo. However, we at The Rec have been looking forward to Viggo absolutely shining in this movie. He was made for this role. He has a commanding presence that Pearce just never will.
The point to be taken is that The Road is one of the greatest stories we’ve experienced in a long time. It deserves perfection on the big screen. And now, I’m afraid we’re already dealing with a mediocre transition from novel to film, and we will be left to wonder why we got the Count instead of the King.

KC, I agree. Not only does Viggo have the presence, he’s also a single dad who has been raising an only son. Can you imagine how much that would factor in to his performance?
Well said Megan. When a great actor like Viggo can take something from home and bring it to life on film, it’s something truly special. The character of “the man” in the story begs for Viggo to play it on screen!
I have a hard time seeing the man in feathers above giving this character justice.
I like Pearce as an actor, he was also really good in LA Confidential.
However, I am always disappointed when we miss out in the chance to see Viggo’s balls on screen.
Me too.
I just hope that Pearce wears that feathery shirt in the movie.
You never know. Pearce was great in “The Time Machine.”
I’m joking, of course.
This is one my my favorite books of all time. Bascially, I should be directing this film, and any other director will fail by comparison.
And now this news. Ugh.
